Apes can think ahead

People aren’t the only ones making plans. New research as reported by Timeforkids.com suggests that two species of great apes have the ability to think ahead. Researchers say this ability developed long before electronic planners or even the most basic calendars existed.

Earlier research had shown that apes could find or even make tools to solve a problem on the spot. Scientists at the Max Planck Institute conducted their experiments to see whether apes would hold onto the tools for future use. Six out of 16 times, the apes chose the right tool, kept it with them in the waiting room and used it to reach the reward. The apes were just as successful even after more time passed.

Poetic twist

The Two-Toed Tree-Toad
A tree-toad loved a she-toad
Who lived up in a tree.
He was a two-toed tree-toad,
But a three-toed toad was she.
The two-toed tree-toad tried to win
The three-toed she-toad's heart,
For the two-toed tree-toad loved the ground
That the three-toed tree-toad trod.
But the two-toed tree-toad tried in vain;
He couldn't please her whim.
From her tree-toad bower,
With her three-toed power,
The she-toad vetoed him.
